Birth Trauma
A birth
trauma occurs when the birth process is very long or arduous, which
leaves the newborn with bruising, edema, fractures, or neuropathies. The
possibility for a birth trauma should be anticipated when the woman
has a small pelvic measurement, when the infant seems large for gestational
age, or when there is a breech or other abnormal presentation. The
molding of the infant’s head is frequently noted.
When the
risk factors for a birth trauma occurring are greater, proper care
and precaution should be put into place. The number of birth trauma
is decreasing due to the improved prenatal diagnosis and monitoring
during labor that has helped to prevent neurologic and other birth
trauma injuries. By closely monitoring the baby the medical experts
may be able to prevent fetal distress and perform an emergency cesarean
section if the fetal distress persists to prevent birth trauma from
occurring. Because of the ability to perform cesarean sections some
birth trauma is avoidable because it can replace vacuum extractions
or mid or high forceps deliveries.
